$8M for nanoscale quantum systems at Sherbrooke, McGill, and Concordia

CFI logo Jun 2015: The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Quebec government, and other partners have recently announced support for the New Initiative for Quantum Information Science and Technology (NIQUIST) of nearly $8M. The NIQUIST project aims to push nanofabrication barriers to reveal new phenomena and enable development of nanoscale devices whose quantum coherence properties could transform our information, sensing, and communication technologies.

Led by Profs. Reulet, Fournier, and Pioro-Ladriere at the University of Sherbrooke, the NIQUIST research team brings together scientists at Sherbrooke with collaborators at McGill and Concordia, including Profs. Childress, Gervais, and Sankey in McGill's Department of Physics. The project funding will support a world-class set of nanofabrication and characterization tools, notably including a new multi-beam focused ion beam facility at Sherbrooke that will be unique in Canada. McGill's Department of Physics will gain access to this infrastructure, as well as benefitting from nearly $0.8M for related equipment in Prof. Childress' and Sankey's laboratories. Moreover, the NIQUIST project will foster collaborations between nano-science researchers at the three universities.
