Quantum Phase Transitions in Ultracold Atoms and Condensed Matter Physics

As one ground state evolves into another ground state by tuning pressure, interactions or field it passes through a violent transition region characterized by strong spatial and temporal fluctuations. What are some examples of such quantum phase transitions? How can they be probed?
