Numerical Methods in Micromagnetics

Nilima Nigam

Math Department
McGill University

The simulation of micromagnetic phenomena using numerical algorithms presents many challenges. The state of magnetization in a permalloy sample can be viewed as the solution of an optimization problem. Equivalently, this state can be obtained using the Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert model. The advantages and disadvantages of using both models will be reviewed, and a survey of numerical methods used will be presented. In the latter half of the talk, a combined Fast-Multipole/Geometric Integration algorithm for solving the LLG equation will be presented.
