Detection Experiments for Terrestrial WIMPs and Galactic MACHOs

Larry Widrow

Queen's University

I will present an overview of current efforts to search for two types of galactic dark matter, WIMPs and MACHOs, focusing on how our understanding of the structure of the dark halo influences these experiments. For WIMPs, a new picture of the fine structure of the dark halo suggests that terrestrial detection experiments may provide a wealth of information on the structure and formation history of the Galactic halo. With respect to MACHOs, observations of gravitational microlensing toward the Andromeda galaxy currently underway should resolve the essential question raised by microlensing experiments toward the Magellanic Clouds, namely `Do MACHOs comprise a substantial fraction of the dark halo'. New models of the Andromeda Galaxy will be presented.
