Using the Polarization Knob in X-ray Physics

Ken Finkelstein

Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source

The polarization properties of photons at x-ray energies, particularly synchrotron radiation will be reviewed with an emphasis on applications to studies of condensed matter systems. We discuss the production of polarized x-rays by modern sources, how these properties may be manipulated and measured, and describe some examples where polarized beams have been used to revealed new phenomenon and/or improved our understanding of materials.
