XY Spin and Gauge Glasses: A Controversy Resolved?

Mike Kosterlitz

Brown University

XY spin and gauge glasses have been a source of controversy for some time. Most of the folklore is based on numerical simulations on very small systems and is inconsistent with analytic results or plausible conjectures. Existing results are reviewed and argued to be internally inconsistent. A method to extract the T=0 stiffness exponents, which are fundamental to the droplet picture of Fisher & Huse, is presented and the consequences of our new estimates discussed for these systems in 2D & 3D.
