Atom-by-atom Fabrication of Silicon Nanostructures

Prof. Shi-Yu Wu

University of Louisville

Using an O(N)/NOTB-MD scheme and a method of local analysis, we have investigated the geometry, energetics, and local electronic properties of some Si-nanostructures, including the nucleus of the initial stage of growth of Si/Si(100), the Si-nanoparticles, and the Si-nanorods. The underlying mechanisms for the formation of these structures will be discussed in terms of the interplay between the stability and the geometry, energetics, and local electronic structures of these structures.
