Microfabricated Si cantilevers are versatile sensors for physical, chemical or biochemical reactions which take place directly on the cantilever surface. Arrays of cantilevers can be used as an artificial nose to detect volatile analytes e.g. different alcohols or natural flavors in air. Especially, we show that the use of the arrays in liquids allows to monitor pH changes and even molecular recognition events like oligonucleotide hybridization.
