Andreas Moser IBM Almaden Research Center In the past few years, superparamagnetic effects in magnetic recording have been frequently discussed. Theoretical models predicted these effects to be the main block on the road to areal densities beyond 40 - 100 GBit/in2. In this presentation, an overview of magnetic recording will be given and superparamagnetic effects in recording media as well as their potential impact on future magnetic media generations will be discussed. Various alternative media designs for extremely high density recording beyond 40-100 Gbits/in2, such as nanoparticle media, patterned media and high-anisitropy media, will be reviewed. The discussions are supported by static write/read tester experiments, which include writing bits at extremely high areal densities and characterizing the stability of recording media against thermal fluctuations.
