Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Lithium-ion batteries are the state-of-the-art rechargeable power sources for lap-top computers, cell phones, etc. They can store about twice the energy per unit weight compared to other rechargeables. I will show how this energy advantage can be increased another factor of two, by substituting nanostructured materials for the electrodes currently used in the cells. This will lead to a further reduction in size and weight of consumer electronic devices. Emphasis will be placed on the creative Materials Science steps which have led to this advance.
