High-energy string-brane collisions: an instructive gedanken experiment?

Gabriele Veneziano

Collège de France

After a short summary on transplanckian-energy string-string collisions I will describe recent work on the easier problem of a massless closed string scattering off a stack of N Dp-branes in the high-energy, large-N limit. In certain regimes flat spacetime calculations reproduce expectations from an effective brane-induced curved geometry. Other regimes, under investigation, should allow to understand the fate of the closed string when it is captured and its energy is dissipated into open string excitations of the branes, hopefully offering, for p=3, new insights into the AdS/CFT correspondence.
