Optomechanics With A Twist

Mishkat Bhattacharya

Rochester Institute of Technology

Optical Levitation In this talk I will first introduce the field of cavity optomechanics, i.e. the interaction of mechanical oscillators with electromagnetic modes, including the seminal contributions of several faculty members at McGill. Subsequently, I will describe two variations on this basic theme. The first variation will focus on the long-term interest of our group in the coupling of mechanical torsional and rotational motion with light beams carrying orbital angular momentum. The second variation will describe our more recent work on cavityless optomechanics, specifically the optical levitation experiments being carried out in the group of our collaborator Prof. A. N. Vamivakas at the University of Rochester.
