From Nonlinear Hall Effect to Topological Optoelectronics

Liang Fu

MIT

I will describe recent theories and experiments on nonlinear Hall effect in quantum materials at zero magnetic field, where an applied electric field induces a transverse current in second order. This effect arises from anomalous velocity due to current-induced Berry curvature in inversion-breaking systems. Large nonlinear Hall effect has been found in topological materials, and opens a new path for terahertz/infrared photo detection and energy harvesting applications.
