Applications and Admissions

Applications to the Graduate Program must be done online on uApply. Information regarding the application procedure and the application forms can be found here. If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to [email protected].

It is strongly encouraged that you indicate your research interest(s) and/or supervisor preferences on the application form. The list of research areas and the professors in the Department can be found here. You should also attempt to make a connection (usually through email) to your preferred supervisor(s). You can find advice on contacting potential supervisors here. As stated therein, we also encourage you to reach out to the graduate students of your preferred supervisor(s).

Applicants who are completing or have completed an M.Sc. degree can apply to our Ph.D. program. Students who are completing or have completed a B.Sc. degree should apply to our M.Sc. program. International degree equivalency information can be found here.

For detailed instructions on the online application process and how to upload required supporting documents, please see https://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/how-apply/submit-your-application. All supplemental application materials and supporting documents must be uploaded directly to the McGill admissions processing system. Applicants are required to ask two instructors familiar with their work to upload letters of recommendation on letterhead from their institution with original signatures and dates. The instructors are requested to use their own judgement in writing the recommendation letter. There is no required format. Applicants must provide the names and email addresses of the letter writers on their application form. McGill will contact these referees and invite them to upload references on their behalf.

GRE is not required. However, applicants are encouraged to take the GRE (General and Subject) and provide the results, as many supervisors make use of this information in selecting students. Students can check with their potential supervisor if they are interested in GRE scores. Students from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English via the TOEFL examination, with a minimum score of 567 for the paper based test, or a minimum score of 86 for the internet based test with each component not less than 20. For the IELTS exam, with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required. For more information on the English proficiency requirement, please consult this webpage. The graduate application fee is $120.99.
