NOT apply to graduate students.
Guidelines for Departmental Reassessment Policies
In accordance with the Faculty of Science reassessment/reread policy,
students can request a reassessment of course work (term papers, mid-terms,
assignments, quizzes, etc.) for which they have received a mark. Following
are the Departmental Guidelines for such a reassessment.
- The deadline for requesting a reassessment of course work is 10 working
days after the graded material has been made available for students to view
it. Students cannot request reassessments of work that has been returned to
them. Reassessments should normally be completed within 20 working days of the
request.
- In accordance with the Charter of Student Rights, and subject to the
conditions stated therein, students have the right to consult any written
submission for which they have received a mark and to discuss this submission
with the examiner.
- Students who wish to have a formal reassessment of a grade must submit a
request in writing to the Chair/Director (or designate) of the unit and
must include the reasons for such the request.
- The Chair/Director shall ask a member of the unit (other than the
instructor) who is competent in the area of the assignment to review the
original work and to assess the appropriateness of the original grade. The
reviewer shall be given the original work, with marginalia, corrections,
summary comments and mark intact, as well as a grading key, if one is
available. The reviewer may, where appropriate, also be given examples of
other students' graded work. Note that, rather than recorrect the work and
grade it as they would have done themselves, reviewers assess the
appropriateness of the original grade based, for example, on the application
of the grading key to the student's work.
- The reviewer must support his or her opinion of the original grade with a
brief memorandum to the Chair/Director.
- The result of the reassessment shall be communicated to the student, and
the course instructor, as soon as possible, by the Chair/Director in writing
along with the reasons for the decision.
